No, in reality it would never happen.

no. he should have tied up the kraut if he wanted to leave him.

that movie is pathetic. his squad is supposed to be a ranger squad which was the eite at the time.

instead we see stupid vin diesel getting shot for standing in the open, capt miler is that his name making stupid decision after another, almost every one being undisciplined and questioning the order coming from the very top of the army to get ryan, and then one of his men getting stabbed in the throat in hand to hand combat.

wake up people., the rangers at the time were the elite, probably of higher stature than seal and delta today, specially picked men who were physically and mentally superior in many respects, rangers were the ones that climbed that high cliff at normandy at the height of the battle. there is also detailed account that rangers beat the marines record time in storming the beach on their FIRST TRY with equipment and all as against the marines who practiced it repeatedly preparing for the asian theater of the war. no pussy would absolutely make it to ranger if a regular gerry could shove a knife at your throat. the way the movie played out the airborne of which ryan was a part were better than rangers. this is just absolutely false. no disrespect to airborne but rangers of world war 2 were elite of the elite.

spielberg is an idiot.

hmm.

Captain Miller was compassionate I think. A lot of captains wouldn’t of done what he did by letting the guy walk. It’s not really a question that can be answered. It all comes down to who you are and whether it was right/wrong in YOUR eyes. It’s an opinion.

My opinion is, yes, it was right. The dude was begging anyways, stooped so low and pathetic. I think Captain Miller took pity on him.

Yeah probably, in the book, "All Quiet on the Western Front" they say that the way they dealt with prisoners was to cut the suspender straps on their pants so the captured soldiers would have to hold their pants up.

This isn’t just Hollywood fiction: consider the decision before Lt. Mike Murphy, USN (SEAL) in 2005. Per Marcus’ book Lone Survivor, he had to decide what to do about a group of Afghan goatherds.

You can rarely say "right" or "wrong" for these decisions. You can armchair QB all Monday long, but until you are there, you don’t know what you’d do…or what it’s like to make those decisions. But the habit of playing realistic moral calculus will help once you do get there.

Treating prisoners humanely is HUGELY important for Americans, but allowing yourself to be compromised while alone and unafraid in injun’ country…that’s damn near suicide. The SEALs decided to let the goatherds go…and they promptly called a company of Taliban to their position.

But I don’t fault Murph for making the humane decision. If you must err, do so on the side of being morally clean. He did right by America by doing so. The one thing I do find explicit fault with is that he ceded command of his team by making it a vote. No matter how informal, "dude style leadership" small unit SOF gets, an officer still needs to be "Sir" during such decisions. Sucks, but that’s our job. Our men get paid to ‘do.’ We get paid to make decisions: this is our one purpose.

But by God, he fought like ten men in the aftermath. At one point he ran into the open to get signal for a sat phone…his men’s only hope of survival. Despite multiple bullets to his chest while on the phone, he still said please and thank you. He continued to fight after the phone call. Rightfully, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
